Identification of the factors associated with availments of medicines from the newly-implemented Philippine Package of Essential Non-Communicable Diseases Interventions (PhilPEN) is vital to revise procedures and maximize utilization.

Objective: The study was conducted to determine the patient-related factors associated with the utilization of BP-lowering medications from PhilPEN by adult hypertensive patients in the pilot barangays of the AMIGA-UP Community Health and Development Program in Amadeo, Cavite.

Methods: A case-control study was done among hypertensive residents aged 25 years and above. Data were collected thru interviewer-assisted questionnaires, encoded in MS Excel 2011 and analyzed using an evaluation copy of IBM SPSS.

Results: Hypertensives included in the study were 340 adults – 170 availed of PhilPEN-provided medicines (utilizers) and 170 were non-utilizers. Respondents who were at least college level, with other sources of income, with nuclear family structure, with symptoms of elevated BP, with other non-anti-hypertensive medications, had regular consultation with a physician, and has been hospitalized for the past year were less likely to avail. On the other hand, hypertensives using other services from the LHC were more likely to avail medications. Utilizers were also shown to significantly consider service characteristics and decision to seek consult was largely associated with availability of medicines, proximity of facilities, presence of healthcare professionals, and pleasant behaviors of healthcare workers. Utilizers were shown to have a positive perception on hypertension, more positive beliefs on medicine, and would often decide to use generic drugs.

Conclusion: There was positive relationship between utilization of medications and availments of other LHC services. Educational attainment, other sources of income, nuclear family structure, symptoms of elevated BP, other nonanti-hypertensive medicines, regular consultation and hospitalization for the past year were inversely related to utilization.

Keywords: hypertension, PhilPEN, utilization, medication

[14,21
16
post-3517","abstract","type-abstract","status-publish","hentry","category-abstract","category-abstract_2019_vol57_issue2","tag-abstract
["GET
