Â鶹ֱ²¥ Research Agenda Setting Workshop /journal/news-events/pafp-research-agenda-setting-workshop/ /journal/news-events/pafp-research-agenda-setting-workshop/#respond Tue, 03 Oct 2023 04:48:53 +0000 /journal/?p=4218

By Dr Vince Edward Araneta

The Philippine Academy of Family Physicians Research Agenda and Grants working committee conducted its workshop last September 16, 2023. This was part of the initiative taken by the committee that aims to develop the 5-year organizational research agenda (2024 – 2028). This was divided into phases, the pre-implementation, implementation, and dissemination phases. The half-day workshop was part of the second phase and leaders from the organization pillars, regions, affiliate organizations and selected training institutions were invited. There was a total of 16 attendees both from the face to face and online participants. Dr. Daisy Medina, the chairman of the said committee presented also before the workshop proper the results of the survey which was part of the pre-implementation phase that was conducted to obtain inputs from the members of the organization regarding research topics that should be prioritized and those that are relevant to their own setting. There was a total of 104 respondents and well represented by 94 institutions and 61 chapters. The results of the survey showed relevant topics under the National Unified Health Research Agenda (NUHRA) 2017-2022 with 34 subthemes and most fall under responsive health systems. The top 3 most preferred research methods were meta-analysis/systematic reviews, experimental, and descriptive.

The workshop generated 67 research topics within 44 subthemes, most falling under the 2023-2028 NUHRA. A wide variety of topics were generated with most involving disease management, health promotion and health systems strengthening towards Universal Health Care. Common topics among the 2 groups of participants were the utilization of Family Medicine Clinical Practice Guidelines, cost-effectiveness studies on primary care interventions, role of family physicians in Universal Healthcare implementation, patient navigation and referral system.   There were also topics presented that were outside the NUHRA themes such as topics involving the PFC Matrix, Training Needs Assessment, and other Family Medicine principles.

Research questions developed by the NCR-Luzon group focused on FCM practice (e.g. non-pharmacologic intervention effectiveness in prevention of NCDs, community-based interventions in the prevention of substance abuse), FCM training (e.g. KAP on Philhealth Konsulta Package, Role of FM in UHC, gaps and barriers in standardizing FCM curriculum) and on Specialties and Subspecialties Training (e.g. healthy aging approaches and practice among geriatric patients, mental health and common coping mechanisms among healthcare workers). The Visayas-Mindanao group developed questions regarding the physician of choice of patients and their family, equitable compensation package for primary care and testing a model of navigation referral under Health Systems Strengthening. For Health Promotion, research questions centered on expenditures for preventive services, KAP on the integration of Traditional and Complementary medicine in FM Practice and lastly for Disease Management, on prevalence of and researches related to Diabetes and HIV, and factors affecting utilization of Family Medicine Clinical Practice Guidelines among consultants and physicians.
